I live in Reno, Nevada. Having grown up in a German Lutheran American tradition in the heart of the United States, I have no known connection with your church or its historical roots, and yet your pastor's words and some of the ancient founding Celtic concepts of your version of Christian faith have spoken to my heart and touched my soul. Thank you for this beautiful website.

I LOVE the photo of the church with the castle in the background. I am compiling a friend's family history, and she has an Ogilvie line---at least two generations worshipped at this church. Than you for all you offer.

Looked in on your site because I have a framed marriage license for my Great Grandparents, Michael Currier and Elizabeth Wilson from St. Cuthbert's dated 1877. The minister is listed as A. Brown. Loved your site and hope to visit someday from Canada.

This is a message for all those with Hutchison connections.. I have a letter from my G-G-G-Grandfather dated 1914 in which he mentions being Christened in St Cuthbert's. His name was William Murray Hutchison. His parents were James Horsbrugh Hutchins(on) and Euphemia Skinner, and he had a brother by the name of Salvo. If this rings any bells please get in touch as I just can't get to St Cuthbert's anytime soon!! Regards - James

Hello - My GT/Gt/Grandparents weremarried in your church in 1827 - Francis Borrowscale / Hannah Hardy Although there were of Cumberland and Hannah was of Northumberland - they married in Scotland. I wonder what the connection was - was it through the Hardy name. - Was there a connection with the Hardy name. It really looks a lovely church inside and outside. Joan Borrowscale, Liverpool

A most interesting web site which I am happy to say I found by accident. I visited Edinburgh in 1996 & had to see St. Cuthbert's as there is some family history here. The rest of this message is for Dr. James Lawrence Hutchison who left an entry 18 Dec 1004. I am a distant relative of your GGGF's first wife, Janet Fletcher. For many years now I have been researching my family history. In 2000 I visited your GGGF's grave in Carillon. Today I just found Dr. J.A. Hutchison & family on the 1901 Canadian census. Would like to make contact to compare notes. Joan McGiveron

I visited your beautiful city in April, and got a glimpse of your church from the city tour bus. I did not have a chance to go inside, which I regret. Maybe some day I'll return and make it a point to visit St. Cuthbert's.

Neville Brown - I too have gt gt gt grandparents - Hutchison - George Hutchison married Charlotte Peddie on 13th June 1825 at St Cuthberts Church, Edinburgh. I suspect there are various families of Hutchison unrelated in Edinburgh - I am now going to look at the site of St Cuthberts Church as I never knew my ancestors were Scottish and I am absolutely thrilled. Thanks for the opportunity to leave messages what a very kind gesture. I immediately felt at home when I visited Edinburgh years ago. Regards Gloria.

I read a message from Neville Brown of New Zealand who said he had Hutchison relatives who were married at St. Cuthberts. My Grandmother's name was Brown and her family were close to the Hutchison family. I wonder if we are related. I have a few Hutchison dates of birth and names back to 1789.

I was so happy to locate your web site! I have been reesarching my Scottish roots, and generations of my family were born, married, & died in Edinburgh & a GREAT many of them at St. Cuthbert's! It was wonderful to see the pictures of the church. I have been to Edinburgh numerous times & somehow managed to miss finding it. I shall ask the current set of cousins to go take some pictures & send to me. I look forward to someday attending a service in your beautiful church.

have been browsing through your site and think it is charming. I am from Canada and would like to know if this site would be for the Church that my great-great-great grandparents, Lauchlan John Dempster and Mary Cummings, were married in. (1835) The record says they were married in the Parish Church of St. Cuthberts, by the Reverend Doctor David Dickson. As I get further into my research, I am setting out an itinerary that I would like very much, someday, to follow through on during a trip to Scotland. Churches my grandparents were married in would be of great interest to me. If this is the right one, it would be on my list of places to visit. Sincerely Elizebeth Dempster. (Thorold ON Canada)

Have just discovered that although my maternal grandparents were both born in New Zealand, they each had a set of grand parents married in St Cuthbert's: Jemima Redpath to William Walker in 1849 and James Thompson to Johanna Black in 1853. I will be in Edinburgh in early May, and look forward to visiting St Cuthbert's.

I attended St Cuthbert's Parish Church for many years while boarding at St Denis School. In 1972 Dr Leonard Small confirmed me into the Church. When planning our marriage in 1983 my greatest wish was to have Dr Small hold the service for Mark and I in the War Memorial Chapel, one problem, he had retired many years before... but for an old St Denis school girl anything was possible in his book!! He married us on the 23 July and with his gift of words made it a day that will always be very special... I felt very honoured to be able to visit him not long before his death to introduce our son to him. Dr Small was very much part of the Church for many years and though his preaching and love of life and people I have drawn strength through my own life. It is many years now since I was last in Edinburgh but it was lovely to look at the web site and bring back memories of Sunday school, Dr Smalls wonderful sermons and of course sucking polo mints under the school mistresses eyes!!

Cuthbert is such a rare name where I come from, I live in the state of Maine in the US. It's always interesting to learn more and more about the name and it's roots. Some day I hope to visit Scotland and dig up my roots. My mother and father are elderly, and my mother Eleanor a devout catholic, raised 8 kids that way, is terminally ill, but she is determined to make it there this spring. Anyone with suggestions as to how to make her journey more comfortable, I would love to hear it. God Bless. Liz

A fascinating web site & a church with a fascinating history. I found your website because I found a family record that stated my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents(Hutchison) were married in St Cuthberts Church, Edinburgh. Searching for St Cuthberts, I came across your website & have spent the last hour or so engrossed both in the beauty of your church and its history. I am from New Zealand & I sincerely hope to visit one day when I visit Scotland. Many thanks Neville

Well, I did vsit St.Cuthbert's again, this time with my wife, daughter and two of my grand-children. They were very impressed, especially with the fact that their ancestors were buried in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. At this time, with permission of the authorities at Mortonhall Crematorium, and the knowledge of the Minister of St.Cuthberts, we placed a small marker stone at the site of the Maule burial ground. Since then, another of the Maule clan, from New Zealand, has visited the site and was equally impressed. Nice visiting again.
